Sending a poem sounds old fashioned and out dated, but a personalized and meaningful poem written in a beautiful card is a gift that will be theirs to keep forever, not simply a commercially produced one. Often your emotions are so stirred up that it can be very difficult to come up with words of condolence for those that need them.
Seeing a life celebrated and hearing words of sympathy and celebration from others often helps them move through their own grief journey. Great poets in history have made a habit of penning verses for each other in response to any number of personal relationships. Don't use complicated language, keep it simple.
Missing a loved one after death can be a difficult time. Similarly, a love poem can be easily identified by the language itself. Perhaps you can extract some meaning from the lines that hit home, and perhaps the poem is crap to start out with, so go find a poet you like.
These steps will get you started in writing poetry. Simplicity is the key.
